Gypsy Pilgrimage celebrated in Stes.-Maries-de-la-Mer

Posted 1 year ago by igor in response to avatar abdul's question: How do gypsies in Stes.-Maries-de-la-Mer celebrate the Gypsy Pilgrimage? with their traditional music, I suppose, but I'm curious to know more (give a different answer) .

May 24 is the festival day and it's dedicated to Sarah, the gitane hero, believed to have joined Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome and Mary Jacobe in AD 40, when they were exiled from Judea. Custom says their boat, left without oars, miraculously managed to reach the shore of Stes.-Maries-de-la-Mer town, that now bears their names. The local church claims to have their bodies.Gypsies gather here yearly, sing at the guitar and dance flamenco.
