Chateau d'If of Marseille

Posted 1 year ago by sakis in response to pint's question: How can I get to that jail in Marseille where Mirabeau was imprisoned? (give a different answer) .

Chateau d'If is the name of the place where Mirabeau, the rebels of 1848 and the Communards of 1871 were convicted. Initially, this 16th century castle was a fortress, later turned into a horrible prison where hundreds of political prisoners and Protestants met death. The castle is set on a very small island, 3.5km from the old port. Address GACM, the company that runs boats to Chateau d'If every one hour and a half, if you want to get there (tel 04 91 55 50 09)! 20 minutes journey, two ways ticket 9 euros!
