Rodin's famous sculpture is located in the town hall in front of l'Hôtel de Ville building The "Bourgeois de Calais" monument was built by Rodin in 1895 in honor of six local citizens who, in 1347, after eight months of holding off the hostile English army, surrendered themselves in hoping they might save the town and its people. Edward III of England spared both the town and its six leaders.
