If I remember it well, the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Besancon is considered to be oldest of this kind in France. It contains quite an impressive collection of paintings including primitive art and Renaisssance works. Also displayed is the Franche-Comte's history of clock making. The museum is located in Place de La Revolution, no.1, visiting fee is 3 euro for one person or free admission for students. Opened from 9.30 am to 6 pm.
