Besancon's Citadel

Posted 1 year ago by tupac in response to avatar ersebet's question: What do you think is a must see in Besancon? Some visiting tips please. (give a different answer) .

It's definitely the citadel of Besancon, situated on top of rue des Fusilles de la Resistance, a 15 min walk from the Porte Noire (Black Gate) which is a triumphal arch dating from the Roman period (about 2nd century BC). The citadel was built for king Louis XIV between 1688 and 1711. Inside the citadel there are three museums with exhibits focused on local culture : Musee Comtois, Musee d'Histoire Naturelle and the Musee de la Resistance et de la Deportation. Entry fee for the citadel is 4 to 7 euro.
